Bringing a Sonoran spirit out of the shadow of mezcal
A traditional Sonoran agave spirit constantly explained as 'basically mezcal' instead of understood on its own terms.
The challenge
Bacanora has its own protected designation, its own agave, its own centuries of Sonoran tradition — but every conversation about it started with "it's kind of like mezcal." That comparison was costing the brand its identity before anyone tasted the bottle.
We stopped explaining Bacanora in relation to anything else and built a story that stood entirely on its own: the specific agave, the region, the families who'd been distilling it long before it had a name outside Sonora. Creative leaned into that specificity — regional imagery, real distillers, language that never once used the word "mezcal" as a crutch.
Bacanora Aguamiel now gets ordered by name, not by comparison. Retail buyers and bartenders talk about it as its own category, and the brand's growth is starting to detach from the broader agave spirits conversation entirely.
